How it works

How does a heat pump work?

An air-to-water heat pump extracts thermal energy from the outdoor air and transfers it into the heating water. It works even when outdoor temperatures fall well below zero – modern units operate efficiently down to −25 °C.

Every 1 kWh of electricity consumed delivers 3–5 kWh of heat. That means savings of 60–70 % compared with conventional electric or gas heating. In summer the unit can also actively cool your home.

A heat pump takes care of heating, hot water and cooling – all in one compact device. It is a smart investment that pays for itself within just a few years.

Why it pays off

Why choose a heat pump?

  • ✓Savings of up to 70 % on heating and hot water
  • ✓Low running costs and a fast return on investment
  • ✓Cheaper electricity tariffs (D56d/D57d)
  • ✓Eco-friendly heating with no emissions or combustion
  • ✓Heating in winter, cooling in summer – year-round comfort
  • ✓Quiet operation with minimal maintenance

Typical applications

Who is a heat pump ideal for?

New builds

The ideal choice from the very start. A heat pump combined with underfloor heating delivers maximum savings and comfort.

Heating refurbishments

Replace an old gas boiler or electric boiler. The heat pump is the most efficient alternative to fossil fuels.

Family homes

The most common type of installation. A single unit covers heating, hot water and cooling for the whole house.

Low-energy houses

Thanks to low heat losses, a heat pump achieves minimal running costs.

Combined with PV

Pairing the system with solar panels maximises savings – the heat pump runs on your own electricity.

Commercial buildings

High-output units for larger premises – offices, guesthouses and retail spaces.

How we work

How is a heat pump installed?

01

Consultation and site survey

We visit you, inspect the existing heating system and propose the optimum type and capacity. We take into account heat losses, hot-water demand and any cooling requirements.

02

Project and quote

We prepare a complete project including a heat-loss calculation, integration into the heating system and a detailed quote.

03

Installation

Certified technicians install both the outdoor and indoor units, integrate the system, complete the wiring and configure the controls. Installation typically takes 2–3 days.

04

Commissioning and training

After installation we run a test cycle, set the heating curves and operating modes. We train you on the controls and hand over all documentation.

Maintenance & service

Heat-pump servicing

Heat pumps require regular servicing to extend their lifespan and ensure peak efficiency. We recommend an annual service inspection.

The service covers checking the pressure in the heating circuit, the refrigerant charge, cleaning the evaporator, inspecting the wiring and verifying the control settings. Catching issues early saves on repair costs.

We offer service contracts with regular inspections as well as rapid emergency response – usually within 48 hours.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The most common type is air-to-water, which extracts heat from outdoor air and delivers it to the heating system. There are also ground-to-water pumps (using geothermal boreholes or ground loops) and air-to-air units (essentially air conditioners that also heat). For family homes, air-to-water is the most common choice thanks to easy installation without boreholes.
Payback depends on the heat source you’re replacing. Replacing an electric boiler typically pays back in 5–8 years; replacing a gas boiler in 8–12 years.
Modern air-to-water heat pumps from brands such as Panasonic or NIBE run reliably down to outdoor temperatures of −20 °C and below. The COP (coefficient of performance) at −7 °C is around 2.5–3 – still significantly more efficient than a direct electric boiler.
